Educators – replace static, text-book data with live data streams

Replacing static, text-book data with real-time data feeds enables educators to enliven their teaching presentations, create more authentic and engaging learning experiences for their students, and connect their classrooms in meaningful ways with communities of industry and geography.

Introduction

Remote sensors and The Things Network now makes it possible for real-time data to be collected from a range of environments and made available to educators for teaching and learning purposes.

Data may relate to air quality, water flows, soil temperature, facility usage e.g. libraries, toilets, parks, trails and roads, animal movements, health and well-being indicators and human engagement in activities – to name just a few of the endless data collection possibilities.

Data is collected from low cost, smart sensors which are strategically placed in the focus environment. This sensory data is then relayed to one or more internet connected gateways, where it is aggregated, analysed, then communicated in a variety of formats e.g. maps, graphs and alerts, to data owners/users.

Educators can access their own or publicly available real-time data, by embedding a link in their Learning Management System (LMS).

getting started...

To get started, follow these steps:

  1. Identify what data you would like to capture.
  2. Speak to opensensing about your data needs.
  3. Purchase recommended smart sensors.
  4. Check The Things Network map (https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/map) to see if your sensors are in reach of a TTN gateway(s). If this is not the case, consider purchasing a TTN gateway.
  5. Locate sensors and gateway in your environment of focus.
  6. Start collecting data.
  7. Embed link to live data feed into LMS by clicking on the IoT button in the Dashboard (refer to screengrabs below).
  8. A live data stream is now available in LMS to share with students.
